Should You Hire a Consultant?

I see dentistry as one of the last frontiers for the entrepreneur in healthcare. Perhaps it's a little like the wild west in that there are still a lot of lone cowboys making their stake and opening up shop on a plot of land with a big dream. But, practicing dentistry is not all there is to making your business a success. There are plenty of skilled clinicians out there that are not making ends meet and are up to their eyeballs in debt, stress, and the shackles of business ownership with no clear path out of the monster they've built for themselves.

Have you ever felt like the business you own actually owns you? It's more common than you'd think.

As a dentist you must wear many hats. It's not enough to simply be an excellent clinician. You must also be excellent in communication, business leadership, staff development, talent recruitment and retention, business systems, capital expenditures, profit and loss statements, business growth strategies, marketing and more. You are, after all, a small business owner. An entrepreneur in every sense of the word.

So, let me ask you something: are you excellent in all these areas? And perhaps more importantly, do you love doing them? Chances are pretty high that you aren't and you don't. Not that you aren't capable! To put it simply, we only have so much time, talent, energy, and mental bandwidth in any given day or area. All successful people, be they business magnates, athletes, politicians, or stars have coaches. In fact, true top performers often have many at one time. Your blind spot is only blind to you. You need to surround yourself with people that can inspire, guide, and offer key insights to you as you take your business to the next level.

A consultant is one of the many tools you should have in your toolbox for life alongside mentors, close friends and family you trust, and a team of talented staff committed to the vision you've laid out. Finding a consultant that has the expertise you need and the character you can trust is one component of a successful formula for making your business thrive and your big dreams come true. There is a price tag, and there are a lot of consultants to pick from, but don't let that deter you. Commit to surrounding yourself with the tools and people you need to be successful and make it happen. Once you do the exponential growth and freedom you will achieve will far outweigh the price or time it took to build that network.

Bottom line: you need a good practice management consultant. Stop wasting time thinking about it, and do it. Make the next 24 months the best you've ever had.
